Yuma, AZ

Yuma is about a 25–30 minute drive and covers pretty much everything you can’t get in Wellton. It’s the closest spot for big shopping runs, restaurants, and medical appointments, and it’s easy to access from the park.

If you’re looking for fun, Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park and the Colorado River State Historic Park are two of the most popular historic sites. The Colorado River has multiple access points for walking, fishing, and paddling, and the city hosts festivals throughout the winter season, including car shows, date festivals, holiday events, and more.

For anyone who needs border access, Los Algodones in Mexico is also a quick trip from the city.

Agriculture and Local Produce

Wellton sits right in Arizona’s agricultural belt, so you’ll see farmland in every direction once you leave the park. Citrus groves and date farms are common in this part of the valley, and seasonal farm stands pop up with whatever’s being harvested at the moment, including oranges, lemons, melons, and a variety of winter vegetables.

If you like buying local, then you’re in for a treat with the winter farmers markets in the area. They usually feature produce from nearby farms, plus baked goods, crafts, and other small-town staples. It’s an easy way to stock up on fresh ingredients without heading all the way into Yuma.

Desert Recreation

The park sits close to wide-open desert and large stretches of BLM land, which makes it easy to get outside without planning a big trip. ATV and UTV riders use the nearby access points to reach miles of off-road routes, and hikers stick to the desert trails for simple out-and-back walks with big views.

Photographers, you will absolutely love the light out here, especially early in the morning, and the lack of city glow makes stargazing surprisingly good on clear nights. It’s a convenient setup where you can head out, explore for a bit, and be back at your site without spending the whole day on the road.
